A word about Wordpress, Wix the like
Why I don't use pre-made templates.
For those not familiar, Wordpress is a what is known as a content management system (CMS). In other words, it is a website builder. The most popular at that, with over 39% of the web utilizing it. It has a ton of bells and whistles to get a full website completed, and you don't need to know how to code. When Wordpress was first introduced, it started out perfect for bloggers. As time went on it was adapted to meet the needs of the many.
Why I do like Wordpress
If you have an extremely large website with hundreds of pages, Wordpress would be a great way to manage all that content. The websites that I code, are geared towards the small local business, the mom and pop stores, dealing with 10 pages is manageable without a CMS in place.
Why I don't like Wordpress
I am a coder of websites, so i admit that I am a little bias. However, when it comes to full control of the design, search engine optimization, and mobile friendly-ness, I feel that coding gives me way more control over the look and feel of my design concepts. I am a strong believer that if a web designer is using pre-made templates, they might not have their customers best interest in mind. They just want to turn over as many websites as quickly as they can.
Wix, Squarespace and the like
Wix and Square are online website builders. They market themselves as being really easy to use (Drag and drop style). If you need a website from start to finish, you can utilize one of there many free templates, or purchase a more detailed one. They also have artificial intelligent (AI) software to help guide you into making a website better suited for you.
Why I do like Wix
If you are a selling online, Wix and Square are a great resource and can really help you getting everything that you need set up. There is a lot of initial set up that needs to happen before selling online, and they both can get you there. Furthermore, if you use Square in your brick and mortar store, you can sink up your data everyday.
Why I don't like Wix
Wix, like Wordpress is a website designer made from templates. If you know your way around a computer and its software, then this might be a good solution for you. However, if you've never used powerpoint, or you feel its difficult to navigate through, then Wix might be a little more complicated.
The big thing here that most people who want to start up a new website don't take into consideration is time. Time management is key when you have a business to run. For example, if you are a small shop owner and just want to throw something up on the web, I highly recommend that you don't. Do your research. If you need a very large website, then Wordpress' content management might be a good solution for you. If you need to sell something online, then Wix might be a good solution for you.
No matter which platform you decide, you will need time to do it. The biggest mis-conception I see with my clients that started using templates is that a) it was harder than anticipated, and b) They didn't have the time to figure it out.
